Ok, I have managed to remove pulseaudio without compiling kernel on FreeBSD=
 9.1.=A0 I just did =0A=0A=0Apkg_delete -f -x pulseaudio=0A=0Aand then ran=
=0A=0Apkgdb -F=0A=0Asince I already rebuilt all the ports that depends on p=
ulseaudio after "make config" to remove pulseaudio dependencies, the above =
command found and thus removed those stale dependencies on pulseaudio.=0A=
=0AHowever, that did not solve the original problem.=A0 That is, the hardwa=
re volume and mute buttons still do nothing, the Volume Control in gnome wo=
n't open, and System->Preferences->Sound won't open.=A0 The only difference=
 is that now there is no small window of "Waiting for sound system to respo=
nd" poping up any more.=A0 When attempting to open the Sound menu, a small =
timer icon still appears for about 15 seconds before disappearing.=0A=0AAnd=
 I can still watch the youtube video with perfect sound volume control unde=
r the youtube video, as before.=0A

The audacious-plugins on my system were build with NOTIFY, OSS4 and PULSE
disabled, anything else was enabled.

However, using jackd it does play still ok.
When I switched to SDL output, the sound became louder and muddy, but it's
still ok.
When I switched to OSS4 output, the sound is equal to SDL, perhaps it does
sound different to jackd (using OSS), regarding to the loudness.
For ALSA the terminal output continued with

ALSA lib ctl_oss.c:408:(_snd_ctl_oss_open) Cannot get mixer info for
device /dev/mixer
alsa: snd_mixer_attach failed: Invalid argument.
ALSA lib ctl_oss.c:408:(_snd_ctl_oss_open) Cannot get mixer info for
device /dev/mixer

It does "work", but "plays" with chattering gaps, the same effect when
using zynaddsubfx by jackd using OSS, when I chose ADAT, but now I used
the analog IOs only. This effect can differ, sometimes it's more like
noise, for ADAT I experienced the noise like sound only for this
synaddsubfx test.

For file writer plugin an error window displays:
"Cannot open /home/musicpd/music/piano2-1.wav: Permission denied."

Ralf
