I use [not yet in ports/mail/ ] /exmh
  http://www.freebsd.org/~jhs/src/bsd/fixes/FreeBSD/ports/generic/mail/exmh/
Other speak well of other ports/mail things such as pine etc,
best discuss that on ports@, not current@ :-)

I use ports/mail/procmail, you can see my control file syntax to sort a load
of mostly freebsd lists at:
