I see...  There are a few ways you could do this:

make DESTDIR=~/testpackage/destdir
# test package
make deinstall
make package
# distibute (I'm assuming that is your intent)

or, use MASTER/SLAVE modes in pkg_add to modify the package once you are
plased with the result
