10/amd64 supports 4TB. Not sure about 8. Moreover if you are running 32 bit don't forget to recompile the kernel with PAE support. So far I remember early FreeBSD didn't come with PAE in default kernel. And if you are still running 8 you should plan on moving forward to 9 or 10.
