It almost sounds like you didn't grab the softupdate *.c and *.h when
you cvsup'ed. I cut and pasted this from a message around 6/24

See if you can find those files. They were symlinks on my system and
we had to remove the two links and recvsup. We also had to start
cvsup'ing src-all about that time. I don't have any idea how much of
it was carried over into 3-stable. There was a lot of traffic when
softupdate was changed and it would be in the archive.
