This is a feature of the default .xinitrc that is distributed by some
Linux distributions, such as SuSE Linux. The default .xinitrc script
does something along the lines of:

	WINDOWMANAGER=${WINDOWMANAGER:-twm}
	# more code here
	# ...
	# finally exec the window manager (twm by default)
	exec ${WINDOWMANEGER}

Of course, this is not Linux-specific and it can be done on any
Unix-type OS that runs XFree86.
