It will give an idea of what is out there.

If you are looking for a lot of bells and whistles...try KDE or Gnome.
I personally like Fluxbox.  http://fluxbox.org/

You have to remember that window managers/desktops are like ice-cream...
some people perfer one flavor over another.  So give some a try...
