Some things I simply want to second:
1: Having an old computer to play with makes learning the system
stress-free and fun
2: The FreeBSD books recommended by others are excellent
In addition:
The Online documentation is the best I've seen anywhere. Learn to use
the man program and read all the man pages you can handle. Read the
online Handbook at www.freebsd.org from beginning to end.
And feel free to come back and ask questions on this mailing list
whenever you hit problems.
