If you're trying to upgrade from 2.2.8 to 3.4, you might want to look at this very helpful page: http://andrsn.stanford.edu/FreeBSD/transit.html I understand it's not an easy thing to do a 2.2.8 to 3.4 upgrade. You might be better off installing 3.4 fresh.
