As far the permissions / security settings for this machine, in the
period I've been having problems with bash, I've upgraded the following
with portupgrade:
aspell
scrollkeeper
gaim
gnomehier

All with the same original /etc/make.conf and with the same options to
portupgrade (-R)

If you've got any ideas, I'm all ears.
