For instance Nokia and Siemens have entirely stepped back from softmodems for mobile handsets in their driver software for Micros~1 based platforms. All newer phones have a built-in "hard" modem that adheres traditional command set conventions. This is probably related to the fact that a hard modem basically comes free because the voice DSP can be used for data as well.
