Are either of you connecting to an external license server?  If so, I
presume that the (FreeBSD) machine running Matlab *doesn't* need to
run the license server.  Correct?  I get the Matlab splash screen, but 
then it dies with the message: 

| MATLAB cannot be started.
| Bad encryption handshake with daemon (-33,137)
