Then make sure you're compiling with default CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS (i.e.
-O -pipe).

ok maybe i have found something that makes sense here.

(neddie@youthless:etc)$ gcc -v
Using builtin specs.
gcc version 2.95.4 20020320 [FreeBSD]

i was using freebsd 4.6 before and upgraded to 4.10-STABLE not so long ago.=
 

which version of gcc is recommended? 
and can i just install it from ports?
