FWIW the last several updates have "done the right thing" in that the first
"install" does indeed update the kernel source tree so I can build my custom
kernel and install it before the reboot without needing to run "install" the
second time.

I do not know exactly when this started working this way, but I suspect that
the 11.2 release is when it did.

I'll say close this ticket as overcome by events, as the undesired behavior=
 I
was reporting no longer happens.
