It was a typo in my /etc/rc.resume, actually.  So embarrassing, but it 
works fine now.  Of course, the Synaptics touchpad doesn't resume 
properly but that's documented on the wiki page, and hopefully kmacy 
will fix it sometime soon.  Thanks so much!
