I have two similar machines running, one with an Adaptec board and 8 U160
disks (IBM IC35L073UWD210) and another one with an Escalade 6800 and 8 80 GB
Maxtor ATA-100 drives.

I didn't check performance (as I didn't really care for that, this was
someone else's problem) but did the more interesting part: I turned off a
disk and waited for activation of the hot spare and - while it was being
refreshed pulled another disk from the RAID 0+1 sets. The SCSI solution was
whining a bit louder about life being unfair and performance being degraded.
Considering the price of both solutions it seems to me that the 3ware
controllers are a good deal. But you should order their 36 inch cables
too... And a good casing that gives you some space for all those cables.
