I think I've done this before...I ended up with something along the lines of

1) Modify the Linux boot sequence to initialize the swap partition
   ('mkswap' command, if I remember correctly, or maybe it was a 'dd' of
   the first N bytes of the partition or some such).  Then use 'swapon' to
   add it.

2) Modify the FreeBSD boot sequence to initialize the swap partition (put
   a disklabel down on it).  Then use 'swapon' to add it.
