sorry i didn't use the proper format, and sorry for being a dumb user. i eventually figured it out, i hadn't read the Gotcha's section of your man page. for those who are interested: i took the volume offline, reset the configuration (somehow one of my subdisks had gotten into a state where it was pointing to an invalid drive), redid the configuration, and did the all important vinum start on the secondary volume. it revived, and now i have a RAID-1 mirror. thanks for the help, Ben
