I have recently converted a machine that was running Suse linux to run
FreeBSD.

Since then, I have not been able to get FreeBSD to recognize the
printer, which worked on the same machine under Suse.

The printer is an Apple Personal LaserWriter NTR

when I type (as root):

cat test.ps > /dev/lpt0

I get

/dev/lpt0: Device busy

The cables are not loose.

the parallel port seems to be configured in the kernel:

ppc0: <Parallel port> at port 0x378-0x37f irq 7 on isa0
ppc0: SMC-like chipset (ECP/EPP/PS2/NIBBLE) in COMPATIBLE mode
ppc0: FIFO with 16/16/15 bytes threshold
ppi0: <Parallel I/O> on ppbus0
plip0: <PLIP network interface> on ppbus0
lpt0: <Printer> on ppbus0
lpt0: Interrupt-driven port

The parallel port is enabled in the BIOS.

I did the ./MAKEDEV recommended in the Handbook.

I plugged the printer into a Windows machine with the same cable and it
prints a test page to the printer just fine.

Any suggestions?
