What is /disk1? Windows partition or what? Or, maybe it was your email 
client? You need to make sure it stays in ASCII (UNIX format) when you 
download this patch and move. Maybe, you can try do this:

jfa# perl -i -pne 's/\r\n/\n/g' 
/usr/ports/x11-wm/metacity/files/patch-expocity

Then try it again to see if it will help. If not, then I can gzip the 
patch and send it to you in private.
