The syntax is slightly different in XFree 4.x. It should be

Option "ZAxisMapping" 	"4 5"
(this is how I've always done it with an Optical Intellimouse--never
used Buttons 7 and ZAxisMapping 6 7 however--nor did I ever have to put
in Buttons 5)
