You didn't need to 'make buildworld' and 'make installworld' because you
already did 'make world'.  'Make world' includes those two steps in it. 
That's probably your problem.

What specifically was the problem that you had with mergemaster?  I just
did 'make world' with 3.4 stable and used mergemaster successfully.
