There's a man page.  You can use the files in
/usr/X11R6/include/X11/bitmaps to set a root background with the
-bitmap option.  Try:

$ xsetroot -bitmap /usr/X11R6/include/X11/bitmaps/mensetmanus

Obviously there are others, too.
