You mean "4.2BSD"?

I didn't know what would work, I always thought you had to specify
things like "/dev/sd0c" as component names.

Again, I didn't think that would work, you should specify the
raw partition (/dev/rccd0c).

It seems you are a little sloppy in your typing, if you did everything 
right but typed "newfs /dev/ccd0c", try "newfs /dev/rccd0c".  That may 
work.
