For what it's worth, my ThinkPad T23 went into a core loop when I updated 
XFree86 from 4.2 to 4.3.  It turns out that the name of the highest resolution 
screen mode for the T23 went from "1408x1050" to "1400x1050" and when the 
server couldn't find a mode it core dumped.  Init, of course, started xdm 
again ...
