i was following these instructions:

    http://www.freebsd.org/releases/7.1R/announce.html

but your suggestion is in line with the handbook:

-freebsdupdate.html#FREEBSDUPDATE-UPGRADE

in any case, repeating the command got me there in the end. or so it seems.
