well, i'm not too sure how exactly to solve your problem, but i once had a
similar one while messing with my /etc/rc configuration.  i do know that
in order to edit anything (as in write to the fs) you first have to mount
the filesystem manually... something like: mount /dev/ad5s1 only whatever
device your root fs is on.
