The problem is *only* linking further .la files, not running executables.  I
actually built e-d-s with db-6.0, broke db6 by upgrading it to db-6.1 so as to
reproduce the problem, and then build with the patch, which fixed the problem.

If you are aiming for a more general fix that is fine, but you still need to
fix the bogus library path specification in evolution-data-server's LDFLAGS.

I see that that touches many many files, so "first half" looks unclear to me.
