Thanks Greg,
Here are some additional descriptors & messages:

Created mount point         /tape
Created entry in                 /etc/fstab
/dev/nrwt0     /tape     ufs    rw     2    2

did a
mount/tape
==>
mount: /tape: unknown special file or file system
_______________________________________

from /root , did a
tar cv *
==>
tar : can't open dev/rsa0: Device not configured

The interface (is) should be an IDE accelerator board in a 16 bit ISA slot

however on booting a 'lsdev' does not seem to list it but does show a:
pxe @0xef70
in addition to the drives and their partitions.

However in the kernel - GENERIC
both

device     sa
and
device     atapist
are present for tape drives

I am (was) assuming that the "Device not configured" was implying a need
to define IRQ & addressses but I could not tell where to apply them

Thanks for your assistance.
