My Chembook notebook also has a suspend to special partition feature, but
after a little experimentation I decided that it was incompatible with
FreeBSD, suitable for WinTel systems.

Are you actually saying you have a "suspend to disk" feature working for
FreeBSD?  Maybe I gave up in my own case too quickly.
