The machine in question runs happily on a much older kernel with very
current binaries... so some bit of kernel kruft is very unhappy in the
latest freebsd-stable.

Given that, I have a question: Are there substantial differences
between 3-STABLE and the 3.3-RELEASE branch?

Dave.
