One major difference is that the symbol versions are not immediately obvious from outside. A typical user is not going to see that lib.so.7 includes foo@FBSD1.0, bar@FBSD1.5, snafu@FBSD1.1 and snafu@FBSD1.2. Someone who notices this is probably going to be able to understand the explanation.
