You created the array and waited until scrubbing was finished?
The Dell Management CD is not a good checking point because you can create the raid array's use-ing this cd(You can also create the array in the raid bios). So try to install nt and if that works then freebsd must install without any trouble.

Try downloading the iso of freebsd 4.3-stable but the boot floppy's must work also.
For the iso use ftp.<country>.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/ISO-IMAGES/4.3-install.iso.
I attached my dmesg of a dell 2400 with PERC 2/Si raid. Never head trouble with this raid adapter since it was supported in -stable
