You probably just forgot to brandelf a static binary.

I'd much rather you install 4.2R -- this is the first release with
support for linux compaq on alpha.  If you have problems with this,
we'll be able to duplicate them and help you.

To get the compiler working. follow the directions at
http://www.cs.duke.edu/~gallatin/compaq_ccc_instructions

If somebody wants to make a port out of this, please do!
