"Install"ing a kernel is simply a matter of copying it to a place that the bootloader can access it. There's nothing special about the procedure. You probably even have more than one kernel already installed. Do you have a /boot/kernel.old directory? If so, then you (probably) have two kernels installed, and you can access the other one from the boot menu, which you can in turn access by selecting the appropriate item on the boot-up menu that displays the pretty and optionally coloured rendition of Beastie.
