We had the SAME EXACT problem.  Seems to be some sort of bug with having
an existing DOS partition, and installing FreeBSD as the second partition.

Deleting your DOS partition, and installing FreeBSD as the "1st" slice,
then re-install DOS as the second partition.  Don't ask me why.. ;)
