tar works on tape devices by default. (/dev/sa0)
To specify a tar file, use the -f option

tar -xf <file> will do the trick.

But first you will have to uncompress it first

add the -z option then

tar -xfz <file>

then if you want it to be verbose, try -v

tar -xvfz <file>


man tar details these options
