 * Beware that  it  will probably break some   programs. It seems  that from a
 * friend's  experience, using   libXpm.so.4.7   with a  program   (like Xfig)
 * compiled with libXpm.so.4.6 can make it core dump...

If this is true, and it is not caused because of a bug/design gaffe in
xfig (i.e., it relied on a bug or an undocumented feature in the old
xpm), the xpm library's major version number should be bumped.

However, I believe the xpm people assign the shlib version numbers, so 
we can't just go ahead and change it.  Do you know who I should
contact about this?

Also, ftp.x.org having a file with a different checksum than the one
in files/md5 (which I assume was a correct checksum for the file at
the main site in France) seems like a big problem to me....
