I solved this problem by booting into the Fixit mode using the installation Media (in my case the first CD of FreeBSD 6). Once inside the Fixit mode, I mounted the root partition and changed the contents of the file. Seems pretty easy on hindsight, although I don't knwo if it has broken my software Raid1 setup.
