I reinstalled my U5 using distrib-20020320.tar.bz2, and while
untaring the ports tgz file, I got the below, this without
softupdates

ad0: WRITE command timeout tag=0 serv=0 - resetting
ata2: resetting devices .. 
ad0: removed from configuration
done

Do others see the same, or ?
