I'm working on a port for gMTP, a GUI for libmtp, but it's going
slowly. Anyone interested in helping? A lot of it is getting the
Sourceforge download tweaked.

I also put in a patch for getting my phone to *not* offer a virtual CD
of drivers when it's plugged in, but to go right to communicating in
MTP. I may need to refactor the relevant code, but I'm sure other people
will need their phones added to the "special snowflake"
category. Unfortunately, I don't think there's any reliable way to
recognize the situation without adding all knowledge of all relevant
devices to the kernel.

MTP isn't really a terrible idea; the storage remains accessible to the
phone while you're transferring to and from it, which is not a good idea
with generic mass storage.
