Why might this happen on Pentium 100 with a PCI SCSI controller
where my crusty old 486 with an ISA SCSI controller could keep
the drive well fed?

Inquiring minds want to know.  :)

Well, I'll probably worry about this problem (again) in another
month or so when its time for another full backup.
