Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking Enlightenment, I'm just doubting
that a relatively unknown window manager is in use by 40% of the
installed base.

Yes, I can see that.  I've just been looking at the screen shot at
http://www.plig.org/xwinman/screenshots/enlightenment.jpg and trying
to form an opinion.
