More narrowing of the problem...

Eliminated the issues with gnome-session segfaulting by upgrading to 5.3, 
running gnome-upgrade.sh, then updating all ports.  Now I have gnome 2.8.2 
and xorg-6.8.1 starting up fine with the vesa driver (without 
acceleration), but the i810 driver is still failing, whether or not 
"Options NoAccel" is used.  I've also updated the graphics/dri port to 
dri-6.2_1,2, with the pthread-related fixes that went in earlier today.
