Yes, the AC97 chipset is supported.  I use it, and it works quite well. 
Just compile in:

device pcm

into any recent 4.x or 5.0 kernel, and reboot.  You may have to do a 

cd /dev ; ./MAKEDEV snd0

once the driver is enabled.
