Subject:   Switching back to DES from MD5 passwords ...

At some point, in upgrading my servers, passwords switched from being DES
to MD5, when generated ... both still work, but I'd rather DES so that my
password file(s) remain compatible with my old systems ...

What changed, and how do I change it back again?
