Try manually configuring the ac97 link rate - find the ac97rate sysctl 
variable for the device:
	sysctl -a | grep ac97rate

Then use sysctl to adjust it to your needs.  There is a calibration loop that 
arrives at the default value and for some reason it seems to have settled in 
the wrong place.
