just a stupid question, but is there any obvious problem in using like
a 400MB partition only for ports with just 1 CG.

And another one... your suggestion works as long as there is only one
writer, if there is concurrent activity you are not going to get
any advantage ?

and because of this and big disks, CGs tend to be large so perhaps the
hysteresis to be used in allocations (isn't that what you proposed ?)
should be computed as a percentage of the CG (or whole partition ?)
size rather than a fixed constant.
