Normally, "mplayer" runs a GUI-less version of mplayer, and as you have been using gnome/menu/icons before, you may not be aware of this, my guess. GTK version of mplayer is launched via "gmplayer" (that's pretty much the one that your icons were using). Well, and since the recent xorg upgrade, that one stopped working, at least for me: $ gmplayer MPlayer 1.0rc2-4.2.1 (C) 2000-2007 MPlayer Team CPU: AMD Phenom(tm) 8450 Triple-Core Processor (Family: 16, Model: 2, Stepping: 3) [...] [ws] Error in display. [ws] Error code: 10 ( BadAccess (attempt to access private resource denied) ) [ws] Request code: 146 [ws] Minor code: 1 [ws] Modules: (NULL) Check in your terminal if that's not the case for you too, that would explain 'the icons not working'. Still, the GUI-less version runs fine.
