You need to change your base system supfile, not your ports supfile, though I 
think this may have just been a typo on your part.  I would recommend 
upgrading to 4.6 Release instead of 4.5, unless you have some very specific 
reason for wanting 4.5.

The release tag would indeed be RELENG_4_6.  Why not just follow the 
instructions given in http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/cutting-edge.html ?  
This is largely what you are proposing, but in order to build a kernel that's 
in sync with the world, I would recommend following the Handbook and using 
make buildworld, make buildkernel, make installkernel, make installworld.
